Meanwhile, the retailer involved declined to comment. Sitting at home, I found myself thinking the same thing repeatedly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This conversation should have happened before the balloon left the shop.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Why Helium Balloon Safety Matters More Than Ever<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After forty years in this industry \u2014 including seven years serving as Chairman of NABAS \u2014 I have discussed <strong>helium balloon safety<\/strong> more times than I can count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trade shows, supplier meetings, retailer visits and conference panels have all included this exact conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet somehow, we are here again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A family is grieving an unimaginable loss.<\/strong><br><strong>Meanwhile, the retailer involved has remained silent.<\/strong><br><strong>Once again, a medical professional is left explaining a danger our industry should already have addressed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every single one of us must do better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">What Is Helium \u2014 And Why Is It Dangerous?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years of squeaky-voice party tricks have badly damaged public understanding of helium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many sensible, responsible adults still see it as harmless fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a scientific perspective, helium is a <strong>noble gas<\/strong>. Being colourless, odourless and inert makes it useful for inflating balloons because it is lighter than air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That same scientific explanation often leads people to assume inhalation is harmless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, that assumption is where the real danger begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">What Happens When Someone Inhales Helium?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breathing in pure helium quickly replaces oxygen inside the lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without oxygen, the brain and body cannot function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people assume the body would immediately warn them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surprisingly, that is not how human biology works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your body\u2019s panic response is triggered by rising <strong>carbon dioxide (CO2)<\/strong> levels rather than falling oxygen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because helium remains chemically inert, carbon dioxide continues leaving the body as normal. More recently, an eight-year-old reportedly lost his life after a birthday balloon had been floating in his bedroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a handful of these tragedies ever make national headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many more go unnoticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coroners have issued warnings. Public health discussions have followed. Despite this, dangerous misunderstandings continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">The Dangerous Myth: \u201cIt Only Happens to Someone Else\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout my career, I have seen responsible adults inhale helium simply to make children laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At parties, sensible people have casually breathed from a nozzle for entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Television presenters and celebrities have even demonstrated it on air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever concerns are raised, the response often sounds familiar:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat only happens to someone else.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reality tells a different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ordinary families are affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responsible parents experience tragedies like this too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The heartbreaking truth is that nobody expects it to happen to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Should Helium Balloons Be Banned?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a moment, I may say something unpopular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, I do not believe a ban is the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Completely understandably, grieving parents may feel differently and I would never criticise that position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Removing helium balloons entirely would not remove the danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, sales would likely move underground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cheap imports already flood online marketplaces. Untrained sellers operate without insurance. Safety guidance disappears when accountability disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History shows repeatedly that pushing industries into the shadows rarely removes risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Education Is the Real Answer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Education remains the only realistic solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responsibility sits with us \u2014 the people selling balloons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approved helium balloon products
