I wasn’t planning to write about this.
At first, it felt like one of those moments better kept quietly in the background. Then I realised something important — this story is not really about me. It is about the industry we have all helped build together.
This week marked UK Small Business Week, a national campaign led by Entrepreneurs Circle to celebrate the contribution independent businesses make to communities and industries across the country.
Among the businesses selected to represent the campaign this year was GO International.
To be completely honest, my instinct was to shy away from the spotlight. After nearly 40 years in business, humility becomes second nature. Experience teaches you far more about what you still need to learn than what you already know, and celebrating achievements never feels entirely comfortable when you have spent decades simply getting on with the work.
Everything changed after reading the feature Entrepreneurs Circle had written.

The story begins in Atlanta in 1986.
At that point in my life, I had left a successful career as a city broker to join my family’s hotel and restaurant business. Before long, it became clear I had made the wrong decision. Stagnation had crept in, and I found myself with an entrepreneurial mindset but nowhere meaningful to channel it.
Then something unexpected happened.
An article in an American business magazine caught my attention. The subject was a novelty talking balloon — hardly the sort of thing expected to shape the future of a business. Yet something about the opportunity stood out.
Rather than overthinking it, I picked up the phone, contacted the company, and booked a flight to Atlanta.
That moment changed everything.
No formal business plan existed. A financial safety net certainly was not in place either. Instead, there was simply a belief that the UK market was underserved and a strong conviction that something valuable could be built around it.
Fast forward 40 years, and GO International is still here.
