Forty years in this industry, and I’ll tell you what still amazes me in the balloon industry UK. The talent. Genuinely!
After four decades working in the balloon industry, I’ve seen trends come and go, products evolve, and businesses rise from kitchen tables to warehouses. But the thing that still stops me in my tracks is the talent in this industry.
Every week, I see professional balloon decorators transforming drab venues into something worthy of a magazine cover.
Meanwhile, retailers are outperforming businesses ten times their size through sheer determination, creativity, and graft.
Some stylists can take a rough idea scribbled on the back of a napkin and turn it into something that leaves a bride speechless.
Then there are the manufacturers, innovating in ways that would have sounded like science fiction when I first started in this business.
At its best, the balloon industry is full of brilliant people doing brilliant things.
And most of you reading this? You’re exactly that.
If you’re building a balloon business, improving your skills, or looking for professional support, we’ve spent years creating resources through GO International and training opportunities at The Balloon Academy to help decorators grow sustainable, profitable businesses.
The Balloon Industry Isn’t Perfect (And You’ve Heard Me Say That Before)
Now, let’s get the grumpy bit out of the way early.
Because yes — there are things that frustrate me.
There’s the “what’s in it for me?” brigade dressing up self-promotion as industry support.
The “free courses” promising to turn someone into a professional balloon decorator overnight, while skipping over the small details that matter — like structure, pricing, customer service, profit margins, and safety.
Because, no, a luxury balloon installation is not held together with hope and Sellotape.
Then there are the overnight TikTok experts. Three videos watched, one glue gun purchased, and suddenly they’re giving business advice.
Don’t even get me started on poor-quality imports, race-to-the-bottom pricing, or wholesalers who couldn’t tell the difference between a foil balloon and a frisbee.
That’s exactly why working with trusted suppliers and professional-grade products matters. Whether it’s premium latex from manufacturers like Sempertex UK Balloons, quality foils, or dependable stock availability, reliability matters when your reputation is on the line.
If you know me, you’ll know I could happily stand on my soapbox in the warehouse for hours about all of this.
But lately, I’ve realised something.
Standing on a soapbox only tells me so much.
Running a Balloon Decorating Business in 2026 Isn’t Easy
Here’s the truth.
I don’t actually know what landed in your inbox this morning that made you sigh.
I don’t know which client disappeared after asking for a detailed quote, only to book the cheapest option they could find instead. (Good luck to them, by the way.)
I don’t know which supplier let you down this week.
Perhaps something arrived late.
Worse still, something else turned up damaged.
Sometimes products arrived cloudy, bent, missing, or completely different from what you ordered.
I don’t know which enquiry you turned away because the numbers simply didn’t work.
And I certainly don’t know what’s keeping you awake at 2am.
Maybe it’s stress.
Maybe you’re wondering whether growing your balloon business is still worth the effort.
Or maybe — and this matters just as much — you’re awake because you’ve finally found a new direction, landed a dream client, or discovered a niche that genuinely excites you.
Both versions matter.
The hard weeks and the exciting ones.
And if you’re trying to improve pricing, installation skills, or profitability, investing in proper education through The Balloon Academy training courses can often be the difference between surviving and building something sustainable.
The Instagram Version vs The Real Version
Social media is a funny thing.
If you believed Instagram, every balloon business in the UK is fully booked, wildly profitable, perfectly organised, and fuelled entirely by iced coffees and good lighting.
But that’s not real life.
The reality of running a balloon decorating business looks more like:
- Answering enquiries at midnight
- Repricing jobs because material costs changed again
- Clients wanting luxury installs on meal-deal budgets
- Working weekends because events don’t magically happen Monday to Friday
- Trying to manage stock and cashflow
- Wondering whether you’re ready to go full-time
And occasionally asking yourself:
“Am I the only one finding this hard?”
You’re not.
Not even close.
What Are the Biggest Challenges Facing Balloon Decorators Right Now?
This is where I’d genuinely love to hear from you.
Because the people who really know what’s happening in this industry aren’t always the loudest online.
They’re not necessarily the people with the prettiest reels or the biggest followings.
The people who know what’s really happening are the ones doing the work.
The ones quoting jobs.
Managing stock.
Inflating balloons.
Dealing with customers.
Building something real.
So tell me:
What’s frustrating you right now?
Is it pricing?
Cheap competition?
Poor-quality products?
Customer expectations?
Late suppliers?
The pressure of social media?
Burnout?
What’s exciting you?
A new business direction?
Better customers?
A milestone you’re proud of?
A niche you’ve discovered?
What would you love to learn next?
Because if there’s one thing forty years in business has taught me, it’s this:
The best businesses never stop learning.
Whether that means mastering premium balloon décor, understanding margins properly, or learning advanced installation techniques, growth matters.
You can explore inspiration, product innovation, and professional-grade supplies through GO International’s balloon collections.
Why Honest Conversations Matter in the Balloon Industry
I read every message people send me.
Not a VA.
Not a team member.
Me.
Usually with a very necessary cup of coffee and a squeeze of honey.
And here’s my promise.
I won’t quote you.
Nor will I share your name.
And you certainly won’t be quietly added to something you never asked to be part of.
But I will listen.
And where I can do something useful with what I hear — I will.
That might mean:
- Improving products
- Challenging manufacturers
- Writing genuinely useful resources
- Creating better training sessions
- Covering topics inside The Balloon Academy
- Helping decorators build stronger businesses
Because if there’s a problem affecting professional balloon decorators, retailers, or party businesses, we should probably be talking about it properly.
Forty Years of Balloon Business Advice in One Lesson
Forty years has taught me something I think is worth saying out loud.
The people who really understand this industry are not always the loudest.
They’re the people turning up every day and doing the work.
Quoting the jobs.
Inflating the balloons.
Managing stock.
Learning.
Improving.
Building something real.
That’s you.
And honestly?
You’re the reason I’m still doing this after forty years.
So tell me — what’s really going on in your business right now?
The good.
The bad.
And the genuinely ridiculous.
I’m listening.
Keep learning. Keep improving. Keep building.
Wishing You Health, Happiness & Success In All You Do.
