The Truth Behind the Smile: A Crisis of Industry Integrity
I’ve spent nearly my entire adult life in this industry—through every high and low. It’s given me purpose, pride, and a community I cherish. However, after forty years of fighting for industry integrity, I now find myself asking a question I never thought I would:
Are our industry leaders really supporting us—or quietly dismantling everything we’ve built?
The Truth Behind the Smile: Industry or Ego?
The warning signs are no longer subtle. In fact, they’re everywhere. What breaks my heart is watching people with immense power and influence pretend it’s “all about the industry,” when deep down we know it couldn’t be further from the truth.
Behind the scenes, behind the smiles, videos, social posts, and corporate hashtags, are individuals and entities who seem to care more about ego, market share, and aggressive profit extraction than about ethics or the long-term health of our community.
As a result, they wave the flag while lowering the standard. They talk about professionalism while prioritising volume over quality. They flood the market with cheap, undercut products and call it “progress.” Meanwhile, it’s costing us everything.
As a respected artist in our field wrote to me recently:
“They aren’t interested; they’re just looking to sell, and everything that’s happening is very sad.”
So the question becomes: with so many talented artists either struggling or leaving, what will be left? Are we really going to let the lunatics take over the asylum?
If we allow this mindset to dominate, what will be left of the industry we love?
The Blind Followership: When Silence Becomes Complicity
Here’s the real tragedy: thousands of good, well-meaning professionals are following blindly. They hang onto every word from supposed leaders, convinced these actors are the saviours. However, in truth, they’re feeding the very rot that’s poisoning our standards, pride, and professional value.
Therefore, we must stop being polite about what’s killing the thing we love. We must stop pretending we don’t see the manipulation. Because silence, at this point, is complicity.
Time to Look in the Mirror: Are We Part of the Problem?
The truth? The blame isn’t theirs alone.
We must reflect on our own actions:
- Are we investing in skills and standards—or just surviving?
- Have we sacrificed integrity for convenience?
- Are we supporting platforms like Temu that contribute to the devaluation of quality?
Busy doesn’t equal better. Survival is not success. True growth requires continuous improvement—not just repetition.
The Cost of Staying Quiet
Yes, I’m tired.
Tired of shouting into the void.
Tired of being labeled difficult for speaking hard truths.
Tired of watching corporate greed and professional apathy dismantle everything we’ve worked for.
But even after four decades, I’m not ready to give up—because…
Why I Still Believe in This Industry
There is hope.
When I lecture at Hertfordshire University or collaborate with members of The Balloon Academy, I see passion, integrity, and commitment to craft. They are the future.
And the good news?
There are still enough of us who care—enough to turn things around.
All it takes is:
- Asking the right questions
- Refusing to support unethical practices
- Choosing integrity over convenience, every time
Before You Sleep Tonight, Ask Yourself:
- Did I act with integrity today?
- Did I add value or simply chase volume?
- Did I stand up for what matters?
Because this industry will only ever be as strong as those willing to protect it.
And I, for one, still believe it’s worth fighting for.
